New Roots Friends connects newcomer elementary and middle-school students with high-school mentors who understand their journey.
Participation is completely free for mentees.

A familiar voice in a new place.
Moving to a new country and starting a new school can feel overwhelming. New Roots Friends connects students with mentors who understand what it is like to adjust to a new school, language, culture, and community. Mentors offer friendship, encouragement, homework support, English practice, and practical guidance for everyday school life.
For newcomer elementary and middle-school students
You are not alone. A high-school mentor can help you understand school life, practice English, work through homework, make friends, and feel more confident in your new community.
For high-school mentors
Share your experience with a younger student who may be going through the same transition you once experienced. Support a younger student, develop leadership and communication skills, contribute to your community, and earn documented volunteer service hours.
How it works

Tell us about yourself or your child.
- We review
Our team reviews language, background, interests, availability, and program needs.
- Mentor screening & training
Applicants complete screening, provide a school reference, and complete required training.
- Parent / guardian consent
A guardian completes the required participation consent before a student begins.
- Matching
We identify a suitable mentor and mentee match.
- Meet & grow together
Pairs participate in supervised program sessions with guidance from our team.
Your child’s safety comes first
- All scheduled sessions are supervised by an approved adult.
- Mentors and mentees do not arrange private or off-site meetings.
- Mentors and mentees do not exchange personal phone numbers or connect through personal social-media accounts for program communication.
- Mentors are not counselors or professional interpreters.
- Mentors immediately report safety concerns to the supervising adult.
- Guardian consent is required before participation.

Parent / guardian consent
The application acknowledgment does not replace formal consent. A parent or guardian must complete a separate participation consent before a minor joins the program.
